Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to play some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
